Moonstone Cabochon

Happy Birthday to all who share this month, you enviably have three birthstones!

Since there is much information to cover on each birthstone, I will discuss each gemstone in separate posts. Each are deserving of their own turn in the spotlight. Since moonstone is my favorite of June’s three birthstones, I’m starting with it.

Moonstone is a phenomenal gemstone. You may recall my discussion of phenomenal gemstones when I was referring to Top Notch Faceting's award winning Garnet as seen here.  Moonstone’s phenom ability is a floating play of light called adularescence, a visual effect reminiscent of the full moon shining through a veil of thin, high clouds.  It is this adularescence that shines across the cabochon's dome, giving the gemstone its name.  According to Hindu mythology, moonstone is made of solidified moonbeams, and legends say that if you hold a moonstone in your mouth on a full moon, you will see your future! Moonstone was also once fortuned to encapsulate a spirit within the stone, bringing good fortune and luck to those who wear it.

Moonstone occurs in a variety of colors such as green, gray, peach, and champagne, all of which I have sprinkled throughout my upcoming collection of stackable rings.  Moonstone sets beautifully in rose, white and yellow precious metals, depending on your preference.  Moonstone is a special gemstone that has a romantic and ethereal quality many cannot resist.

Enjoy your birthstone!  May it bring you all these qualities and more!
