MARCH BIRTHSTONE : AQUAMARINE
9:04 AM
Happy Birthday to all that share this month, Aquamarine is your birthstone
The word Aquamarine is derived from two Latin words that mean water and marina. When blended, they mean "of the sea." Aquamarine is said to evoke the purity of the crystalline waters, and inspire truth and trust. It is even believed to have calmed waves in order to keep sailors safe at sea. In ancient lore, Aquamarine was the treasure of mermaids and a talisman of good luck and protection.
I agree in the calming properties of Aquamarine, but I always overlook it in a jewelry case - it just doesn't excite me. As I learn more about each stone and why it has been chosen as a birthstone, careful consideration suggests perhaps I should give Aquamarine a second chance.
Aquamarine has a color range of watery blues and slightly green-blue to a very strong green-blue. The most prized aquamarines are a strong blue and a high quality Aquamarine is worthy of a diamond setting or a pairing with other stones of equal intensity. It is versatile enough to be set in gold, silver or platinum, depending on the style or design desired.
Aquamarine is often exceptionally transparent, although it can have brilliance. I think it's best used when it is faceted into an emerald cut to show off the play of light inside it's corners. However, Aquamarines can be offered in various shapes from a round brilliant, an ethereal cabochon or carved into artistic sculptures.
Aquamarine is considered a stone of eternal youth and happiness. Who doesn't want that? Next time I look in a jewelry box, the beauty of the Aquamarine won't be lost on me.
Enjoy your birthstone, may it bring you all of these qualities and more!
