Happy Birthday to all who share this month, you enviably have three birthstones!
Since there is much information to cover on each birthstone, I will discuss each gemstone in separate posts. Each are deserving of their own turn in the spotlight. Alexandrite is the rarest of the three birthstones for the lucky June baby.
Alexandrite was first discovered in 1830 in Russia's Ural Mountains and quickly caught the country's attention due to the gemstone's red and green colors, which mirror the Imperial Russian flag. Alexandrite was named after the young Alexander II, heir apparent to the throne.
The first Alexandrites were of very fine quality and displayed vivid hues and dramatic color change, as you have now come to know (through the moonstone, and the garnet) as phenomena. This phenomenal gemstone gives us dramatic proof how much a light source affects color in gemstones, as the green by day and red by night of Alexandrite is nature's magic trick!
Alexandrite's rarity is the direct result of its chemical makeup; the unlikelihood of the rare elements being in the right place at the right time to combine under exactly the precise conditions to create this phenomenal color-changing gemstone is what makes it so rare and valuable. The value of fine Alexandrite is closely tied to (as most stones are) color saturation, strength of color-change, and the clarity of the stone.
